COVID-19: India logs 16,561 new cases, 49 fatalities

NEW DELHI: At least 16,561 new coronavirus cases reported in the country taking the total tally of Covid cases to 4,42,23,557, while the active cases reduced to 1,23,535, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday.

As per the bulletin, the death toll climbed to 5,26,928 with 49 fatalities which include 10 deaths reconciled by Kerala. The active cases comprise 0.28 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.53 per cent, the ministry said.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 5.44 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 4.88 per cent, according to the ministry. Also, 207.47 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vccination drive, the bulletin stated.

The 39 new fatalities include six each from Delhi and Karnataka, five from Maharashtra, four from West Bengal, three each from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, two each from Gujarat, Sikkim and Uttarakhand, and one each from Assam, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Manipur and Odisha.

The Union Government is committed to accelerating the pace and expanding the scope of COVID-19 vaccination throughout the country. The nationwide COVID 19 vaccination started on 16th January 2021. The new phase of universalization of COVID-19 vaccination commenced from 21st June 2021. The vaccination drive has been ramped up through availability of more vaccines, advance visibility of vaccine availability to States and UTs for enabling better planning by them, and streamlining the vaccine supply chain.

As part of the nationwide vaccination drive, Government of India has been supporting the States and UTs by providing them COVID Vaccines free of cost. In the new phase of the universalization of the COVID19 vaccination drive, the Union Government will procure and supply (free of cost) 75% of the vaccines being produced by the vaccine manufacturers in the country to States and UTs.

More than 198.60 crore (1,98,60,41,995) vaccine doses have been provided to States/UTs so far through Govt. of India (free of cost channel) and through direct state procurement category.

More than 7.32 Cr (7,32,90,560) balance and unutilized COVID Vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs to be administered.

India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 207.47 Cr (2,07,47,19,034as per provisional reports till 7 am today. This has been achieved through 2,75,59,030 sessions.

COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years was started on 16 March, 2022. So far, more than 3.96 Cr (3,96,83,369adolescents have been administered with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Similarly, the COVID-19 precaution dose administration for age group 18-59 years also started from 10th April, 2022 onwards.
