NEW DELHI: Droupadi Murmu has been elected to the office of the President of India. She has become India’s first tribal woman President after crossing 50 per cent mark after the third round of counting of votes in the Presidential polls and secured her win in the presidential battle against Yashwant Sinha by a huge margin.

Murmu has bagged 2,161 while Sinha got 1,058 out of the 3,219 valid votes counted so far.

People of Jharkhand started celebrations soon after the news came in. They were seen dancing to the beats of ‘buang’ and ‘dhak’.

Tribals are 27% of Jharkhand’s population and influence the state’s politics and policy. Ms. Murmu, the first tribal woman to be elected president, is the former governor of Jharkhand.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated her saying that she belongs from very simple family and this is a matter of pride that she elected as President of India.

In his tweets, The Union Home Minister said Smt. Draupadi Murmu has reached the highest office of the nation facing difficult circumstances, it shows the immense power of our democracy. Even after so many struggles, the selflessness with which she dedicated herself in the service of the nation and society is an inspiration to all.

The Union Home and Cooperation Minister also said under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi, I express my gratitude to NDA Allies, other political parties and Independents for voting in favour of tribal pride, Smt. Draupadi Murmu. I am sure that Smt. Murmu’s tenure as the 15th President of India will make the country proud. Amit Shah said the nation, especially tribal society is over joyed and is enthusiastically celebrating her massive victory in the Presidential election.

“The election of the NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu, who belongs to a common tribal family, is a proud moment for the country. I wish her all the best. This victory is a milestone towards realizing the resolve of Antyodaya and the empowerment of tribal society,” he said.

 

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Smt. Droupadi Murmu on being elected as President of India.

In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said;

“India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President!

Congratulations to Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji on this feat.”

“Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji’s life, her early struggles, her rich service and her exemplary success motivates each and every Indian. She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalised and the downtrodden.”

“Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand Governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India’s development journey.”

“I would like to thank all those MPs and MLAs across party lines who have supported the candidature of Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji. Her record victory augurs well for our democracy.”

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also congratulated her and said “It is indeed a very proud moment for everyone in Odisha that she has been elected for the highest office in the country”.
