NEW DELHI

Senior Congress leader and former chief of its Punjab unit Sunil Jakhar has joined rival BJP today. Jakhar quit Congress weeks after he was issued a show-cause notice by the party leadership over his criticism of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Speaking about the issue, he said that he was sidelined from the party after pointing out that the party can’t treat Punjab in percentages and divide people over caste. “You can remove Sunil Jakhar from a party post but can’t silence him,” he said.

Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, however, congratulated Jakhar for joining the saffron outfit, saying honest and upright leaders like him cannot breathe in the grand old party. “Right man in the right party. Congratulations to @sunilkjakhar for joining @BJP4India. Honest and upright leaders like him cannot breathe in the @INCIndia anymore,” he tweeted.

“I had a 50-year-old relationship with congress but the decision to quit Congress, not because of any personal dispute, but “fundamental issues” with the party,” he said.

Jakhar had also been critical of the party leadership for picking Channi as Chief Ministerial candidate for the elections.
