China plans to build new highway along LAC to strengthen its strategic position

NEW DELHI: In an attempt that may further escalate conflict between Indian and China, Beijing is allegedly planning to build a new highway along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India to strengthen its strategic position, according to various media reports.

The proposed highway is said to be among 345 construction plans under new national programme that aims to construct a total of 461,000 kms of highway and motorway by 2035, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported.

The proposed highway known as G695 is expected to be built through Cona county that lies immediately north of the LAC, Kamba county bordering Sikkim and Gyirong County near the border with Nepal, the report said.

The report further stated that the planned highway would also go through Burang County between Tibet, Nepal and India as well as Zanda County in Ngari prefecture, parts of which are held by India, it said.
